As the TikTok community grows, our Trust and Safety (T&S) team is more committed than ever to developing and executing strategies to keep people safe on our platform. There are countless opportunities for employees on the T&S team to develop skills in policy development, product management, and more within this unique group.
We sat down with Douglas, Mackenzie, and Atlanta from our teams in the US, Brazil, and Germany to talk about what drew them to their roles and how the resources available at TikTok help them – and their careers – thrive.
What is your role at TikTok?
Douglas: I am a Team Lead in Training and Quality Assurance. Currently, I lead a team that's responsible for reviewing moderated cases in order to provide feedback and track our quality results. My main role is to manage and direct the team's actions to help ensure consistent and fair moderation on the platform.
Mackenzie: I lead a global team that executes all Integrity & Authenticity policies – such as protecting election integrity and fighting against misinformation and impersonation. The team works cross-functionally to detect, enforce, and prevent the spread of misinformation. We build machine learning models, maintain our dedicated moderation flow, and build front-end solutions. Our management of the Global Fact-Checking Program enables us to leverage the insights of certified fact-checking organizations to inform how we enforce TikTok's misinformation policies within our Community Guidelines. The team spans across Singapore, Dublin, Berlin, New York, Mexico City, and San Francisco.
Atlanta: I'm a Quality Analyst based in Germany. My role is to moderate content, align with various stakeholders/partners, and make sure the platform remains safe for audiences of various age groups.
What drew you to TikTok specifically?
Atlanta: I liked the idea of moving from creating TikToks to becoming a part of TikTok! I feel a sense of pride in being part of this fun, creative and evolving organization. Our platform's mission, inspire creativity and bring joy, has always resonated with me. So, here I am!
Douglas: TikTok was able to democratize content creation. When the platform was launched, people started to create without needing expensive film equipment, enabling everyone to reach an audience with creative and funny videos. When the opportunity to join and grow with such an impactful company, I could not let it pass.
Mackenzie: I spent five years working at a different platform on crisis management and election integrity and was ready to try something new and exciting. Working on T&S issues at one of the world's most quickly emerging platforms is the best place to be when it comes to having an impact in the digital space. I haven't looked back since.
Has your scope and responsibilities expanded since you joined the team?
Mackenzie: Yes! I originally joined the company as the Global Issue Owner (GIO) for Misinformation. Quickly after joining, it was clear that a global leader for the Integrity and Authenticity product and process pillar was needed. I raised my hand and made the case for how I would organize and grow the team. One of the things I love about TikTok is how we elevate people within the company. My manager took a chance on me and I'm thankful every day. This increase in responsibilities is hard to come by at other companies and it's something that we pride ourselves on at TikTok. We recognize people's ambitions and career aspirations here – and that should be celebrated and supported.
How else have your leaders supported your growth?
Douglas: My current manager's style has helped me grow by respecting me as a professional and being transparent in our conversations. He does not micromanage me, but rather gives timely and direct feedback whenever an opportunity comes up, discusses possible solutions openly and pragmatically, and aligns expectations.
How would you describe the culture of your team?
Atlanta: I could not have found a better work environment. We always help each other do better. You can reach out to anyone in the organization regarding anything and they will ensure you find your answers at the end of the day. Also, your leaders are cognizant that their team members don't overexert themselves, which speaks to an empathetic workplace that values work-life balance.
What's unique about your experiences at TikTok?
Douglas: I have been given the opportunity to participate in various training programs that highlight project management tools, methodologies, and practices. Being located in São Paulo, I've had various remote managers and peers all over the world exchanging know-how, developing projects, and connecting with stakeholders. I had the opportunity to meet incredible professionals and learn from each of them, something that, without TikTok's values, would not have been possible.
