TikTok is a platform that inspires creativity and brings joy to a global community of over one billion people. The Data Systems Infrastructure team supports this growing community by making sure our systems are using the newest technologies and running as smoothly as possible.
We recently spoke with Brian Trestons, a Data Centre Operations Engineer based in Dublin, Ireland. He shared his experience as a member of the Data Infrastructure Engineering team and how our culture empowers him to aim for the highest and grow his career. Here's what he had to say.
What team are you on, and what do you do?
I work as part of the Data Systems Infrastructure team. We support the growth of the company by building and operating data centers around the globe, and connecting these data centers to create a global network. We support the digital infrastructure during its life cycle and facilitate upgrades to new technologies. Data Systems Infrastructure is constantly improving the expanding infrastructure to meet TikTok’s growing needs.
Why did you join the system infrastructure team, and what do you enjoy most about your work?
It's an exciting time for TikTok because the company is growing rapidly and so is the infrastructure. There are so many new global projects and I wanted to play a part in driving these forward. I enjoy working with the best talent, using the newest technology, and learning from others to build an even stronger team. During my time here, I've learned so much about the digital infrastructure required to operate a global platform on this scale. I've been part of new initiatives and have taken the lead on new projects. If you have the drive and ambition, then you'll be supported here to make anything happen.

How would you describe the culture and ways of working at TikTok?
There are a lot of passionate people working towards the same goals and helping each other achieve them. TikTok is a place where you will learn and grow - openly sharing your thoughts and perspectives is encouraged, and diversity and inclusion are really valued.
TikTok also has a flat structure, which fosters collaboration between colleagues, teams, and leaders. I'm not afraid to ask questions or provide feedback, and it's great to feel comfortable asking for help from my teammates and other experts in our field. My teammates are also supportive, technical, and efficient. They're passionate about engineering excellence, enjoy challenges and more importantly, we have fun working together.
What would you say to anyone considering a role within your function/team?
This is an opportunity to work with a great team on exciting projects using the newest technology. There is always something new and interesting happening at TikTok. It is a great place to grow and develop your career.
We build fast together here at TikTok. Our culture empowers us to own our ideas, explore outside our comfort zone and support each other in the process. Can you share how this may apply to your role/team?
As we are continuing to expand, we are constantly faced with the challenges that this bring. Each country operates differently and has its own rules and ways of getting things done. We have to be flexible and resilient, pushing boundaries and turning these challenges into opportunities.
Now that you have been on your team for some time, what advice would you give to the old you, knowing what you know now?
The first few weeks in TikTok can be overwhelming. You learn a lot of new things about how the company works, figure out the internal systems, and meet new colleagues. Don't let this deter you though - remember that everyone has been through the same thing and is here to support you.
Brian and his team have been vital in supporting the growth of TikTok and our users. If you'd like to be part of our journey, discover opportunities here.
