From launching new markets to shaping how digital economies grow, Jochen and his team are helping define TikTok’s next chapter. As Head of Global Business Solutions, Africa, Jochen leads commercial growth, partnering with advertisers, agencies, creators, and teams on the ground to develop something that’s still very much in motion.
We spoke with Jochen about his journey to TikTok, what makes Africa such a compelling region to build in, and what it really takes to thrive on his team.
Finding opportunity through disruption
Jochen joined TikTok in Oct 2020 after five years at a Silicon valley competitor, at a time when the company was still in its early growth phase. “What attracted me back then was the chance to be part of a true disruptor,” he reflects. “TikTok wasn’t just another platform, it was fundamentally changing how creativity, media, and culture intersect. On top of that, I had the opportunity to build a team from the ground up and move this team to strategic partnership significance and meaningful revenue scale across four industries in the Middle East and North Africa."
After starting in the Middle East's business partnerships, he eventually took on responsibility for driving the monetization strategy across Africa, an environment that combines enormous opportunity with real complexity.
That sense of building, of creating something before it’s fully defined, remains central to his role today. “Change is the only constant here,” Jochen says. “For those comfortable with lightening-fast change, it’s an incredible opportunity that requires constant learning, adapting, and growing in step with the business.”
A region fuelled by diversity and momentum
Africa is one of the most diverse and dynamic continents in the world, and that diversity is a core part of digital opportunity. “No two markets are the same,” Jochen explains. “Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, each has its own culture, consumer behavior, ecosystem innovation, and stage of digital maturity. The diversity makes the work interesting and pushes us to create market-level visions and solutions.”
Over the past year, Jochen’s team has helped strengthen TikTok’s position from media channel to growth infrastructure. In South Africa, TikTok is now firmly established as a strategic partner, while newer markets such as Nigeria, or Kenya, have seen strong early momentum following first-stage monetization product launch.
“What excites me most is the scale of what’s ahead,” Jochen says. “TikTok is still nascent in many of these markets, but the creativity, entrepreneurial energy, and pace of adoption are incredible.”
Beyond advertising, the team is focused on building long-term multiplier effects that support creators, businesses, and consumers alike. From enabling new creative tools and advertising solutions to supporting the growth of local agencies, incubators, and creator communities, the goal is to help accelerate sustainable digital growth across the region.
“Africa is home to some of the youngest, most creative, and digitally engaged audiences in the world,” Jochen adds. “Being able to work across such a diverse set of markets, often simultaneously, creates a unique opportunity to shape how the digital economies, which, in return, creates huge value adds to people.”
Life on the team: fast, entrepreneurial, and empowering
Ask Jochen what it’s like to work on his team, and one word comes up repeatedly: multi-dimensional.
“There’s no such thing as a predictable day,” he says. “You might be working across multiple markets, time zones, and challenges all at once. That’s not for everyone, but for those who lean into challenges and operate at pace, it’s incredibly energizing.”
What makes it work, he believes, is empowerment. “Our environment is entrepreneurial. A solid business case will see the light of day,” he explains. “There’s real freedom to build, test, learn and even fail, as long as we learn from our mistakes.”
That entrepreneurial spirit also means opportunity comes early. “People here get intellectually challenged, sometimes to the point of discomfort,” Jochen admits. “That’s where growth happens. The ceilings are high, and individuals willing to step up will be trusted with meaningful responsibility.”
What it takes to thrive
When it comes to hiring, Jochen looks beyond job titles and perfectly polished CVs. Instead, he focuses on a core set of traits he calls the “Five Hs”: hunger, hustle, heart, hardiness, and humility.
“We look for people who are naturally curious, driven, and resilient,” he says. “In ad tech sales, it takes the intrinsic motivation to deeply understand our clients’ businesses and challenges, and the resilience to keep going when solution A or B doesn’t work, until you find solution C or D.”
For candidates going through the interview process, his advice is simple: show up with genuine curiosity and a clear sense of impact. “Articulate what matters, how to prioritize, and how you’d turn ideas into action. We’re builders here.”
For new joiners, the message is similar. “Be ready to learn fast, ask questions, and lean into ambiguity,” Jochen adds. “If you do that, this can be one of the most rewarding places to build a career.”
Looking ahead
While the work is still unfolding, Jochen is clear about the long-term ambition: to position TikTok as the strategic partner of choice for industries across Africa, working alongside creators, businesses, and communities to support the continent’s digital development and unlock economic opportunity.
“Africa is home to one of the youngest populations in the world, and many of the next billion TikTok users will come from here,” he says. “We’re still early, and that’s what makes it exciting. There’s so much left to build.”
The backdrop is a continent where mobile connectivity continues to expand, digital adoption is accelerating, and creators are increasingly shaping culture and commerce. For businesses navigating this shift, TikTok has become an important bridge between brands and communities.
For those energized by complexity, growth, and the chance to make a tangible impact across diverse markets, Jochen’s team offers a rare opportunity: to help shape how Africa’s next generation of creators, businesses, and consumers participate in the digital economy.
